A federal court in Washington, DC recently weakened rules imposed by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) designed to protect consumers against robocallers. The FCC’s interpretation of its authority to regulate calls under the Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA) was challenged in court. Under the Obama administration, the FCC imposed broad rules to limit robocalls, based on the TCPA. The court has asked the current FCC to review the definition of key terms in the TCPA, such as what constitutes an “autodialer”.
